CSHEMA Professional Development Seminar

January 19th and 21st AND January 26th and 28th, 2021

Conflict Management and Resolution Workshop | Description, Learning Objectives, Design, Exercise Prompts (as questions), and Assessing/Evaluating

Presented by: Jonathan Klane, M.S.Ed., CIH, CSP, CHMM, CIT – Director of Risk Management and Safety Education, BioRAFT and PhD student at ASU in Human/Social Dimensions in Science/Technology

Description:  How many times have you found that a safety issue is actually a conflict that just happens to be about safety?  Let's face it - in safety we deal with a lot of conflict management needs - it's just part of what we do.  In this workshop we'll look at the nature of conflicts (they can be helpful if approached the right way), what works and what doesn't, communication and active listening skills, perspective vs. perception, human behavior and decision making, and how to build up your skills in these areas. We'll engage in active learning with practices, discussion on the learning, some role playing, and have fun throughout the day.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the workshop, active learners should be able to:

  • Describe the nature of conflicts and its pros and cons
  • List several beneficial traits for a conflict manager to have and use
  • Compare and contrast perspective and perception as well as human decision making
  • Demonstrate better conflict management skills

Meet the speaker: Jonathan’s 30+ year career spans many diverse roles and settings including Safety Director for two Colleges of Engineering, teaching EHS and management courses for two colleges back east, and 20+ years as a consultant and trainer.  He now focuses on the people side of safety including researching risk perceptions and the use of narratives to affect them as well as teaching soft skills such as conflict management.

Lighting Resources

LightingResources

Lighting Resources recycles Universal Waste and is the nation’s largest lamp recycler delivering environmentally sound processing to businesses and commercial contractors for more than 35 years. With 12 facilities, our own fleet of permitted vehicles, and a comprehensive mail-back recycling program, Lighting Resources is uniquely positioned to manage universal waste by the unit or truckload. Lighting Resources delivers waste processing and management solutions for all types of lamps, batteries, PCB and non-PCB ballasts, tritium exit signs, smoke detectors, airbags, mercury-containing devices, electronic waste, solar panels and vapes.

Recycling lamps prevents the release of mercury into our environment. Mercury containing lamps such as CFLs and other fluorescent lamps can break when thrown into a dumpster, trashcan, or compactor, or when they end up in a landfill or incinerator. Not only do we reclaim glass, metals, and plastic for re-use in manufacturing, Lighting Resources uses high-temp retort ovens to remove mercury from the phosphorous powder in lamps. We distill the mercury to create uncontaminated mercury for scientific and commercial re-use and create a clean phosphor powder that contains rare earth elements for use in industrial manufacturing. The technology and processes we perform are unsurpassed in the recycling industry. Better equipment means more material is recovered and recycled and the risks associated with toxic contaminants is eliminated.
