How long have you worked in EHS?
I was first hired as a student worker in the EH&S field 17 years ago. I have been employed as a full-time health and safety professional for most of the last 13 years.
How did you get into EHS?
While pursuing my undergraduate degree in biochemistry here at the University of Nevada, Reno, I took a position as a student worker hazardous materials technician. That turned into a graduate assistantship and later a full-time position with our chemical inventory team.
How long have you worked at your current institution?
All of my professional EH&S experience has been at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Best career advice?
Make yourself available. I try to join every meeting I am invited to and take every opportunity I am afforded to talk about the services EH&S can provide. Rather than having to seek out hazardous situations to resolve, if people generally know who you are and what you do, you can crowd source that aspect of safety. I am constantly fielding questions or helping solve problems that are referred to me by email, phone, or through our anonymous online reporting form submitted by everyone from upper administrators to students.
