The Campus Safety Association (CSA) was founded in 1954 to address the unique safety challenges that are found on a college or university campus setting.

Comparisons are sometimes made between the operation of a college or university and running an industry or a research facility or even a service business or small city. In fact, somewhat similar situations may be found in each of these settings; but the founders of CSA realized that it is only on the college or university campus that one will find elements of all of the distinct challenges that industry, research, business, and municipal concerns face.

After CSA was founded, colleges and universities adjusted to a phenomenal period of growth, a spurt that has continued for over 30 years. The Technological Age dawned. Federal agencies imposed what has become an avalanche of regulations, and society became ecologically responsible.

Predictably, in light of these developments, environmental health and safety functions have become more and more integral to the overall success higher education institutions.

From the highly technical—disposal of hazardous materials, proper handling of chemicals, general incineration of campus waste, and interpretation of federal regulations—to the most basic of human concerns—insuring a safe working environment for personnel and assuring safe fire exits from dormitories—colleges and universities increasingly rely on safety professionals.

In 1995, CSA changed its name to Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA). As the professional organization for campus safety specialists, CSHEMA promotes the image and importance of the field itself, defines responsibilities, provides opportunities to learn as well as to mentor, develops skills, and sets up ideal situations for networking. CSHEMA members always have access to the most up-to-the-minute statistics, techniques, regulations, literature, and advice.
